At Research Alloys, we take pride in doing things differently. As Central Ohio’s premier fully enclosed metal recycling facility, we’ve always prioritized a clean, organized, and weather-protected environment for our industrial clients, local contractors, and individual sellers alike.
Over the past few months, we’ve rolled out a series of key site improvements designed to make your visits faster, smoother, and safer than ever.
Read on for a breakdown of the latest upgrades you’ll notice the next time you pull onto the scales.
1. State-of-the-Art Radiation Detection Systems
Safety and material integrity start at the gate. Scrap recycling industry standards—supported by the Recycled Materials Association (ReMA, formerly ISRI)—place a strong emphasis on early screening to prevent accidental contamination from industrial gauges, medical equipment, or naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM).
We have installed new, high-sensitivity radiation portal detectors at our vehicle entrance.
-
Continuous, passive scanning: Scanning happens seamlessly as vehicles pass through the entrance without causing bottlenecks.
-
Environmental & downstream protection: It guarantees that all metals processed and shipped downstream remain 100% compliant and uncontaminated.
2. Streamlined Yard Navigation & Traffic Flow
Whether you are bringing in a full roll-off container of industrial turnings or dropping off copper from a plumbing job, your time is money.
We have reconfigured our indoor yard lanes to separate inbound and outbound vehicle traffic:
-
Follow the new green line: New visitors can easily find our blue building with the help on a newly painted line that guides them right from the weigh-in point to the designated unloading area.
-
Dedicated unloading zones: Small vehicles now have a designated unloading zone just outside the buy-in desk, reducing congestion in our blue building.
-
Faster weigh-and-pay turnaround: Optimized scale-to-sorting routes get you weighed, unloaded, and paid in record time.
3. High-Visibility, Intuitive Signage
To complement the updated traffic flow, you’ll see brand-new, high-contrast directional and informational signage posted throughout the drive-through facility:
-
Material guidelines: Handouts, website guidelines, and our digital message board identify acceptable vs. non-acceptable materials and help speed up sorting at the scale.
-
Hard Hat Zones: You’ll know exactly when you’re entering an area where hard hats must be worn.
4. Updated Yard Safety & Hard Hat Policy
Operating a modern processing yard requires shared commitment to personal safety. In step with updated OSHA guidelines and industry safety initiatives, we have formalized our yard PPE policy:
-
Hard hats required in active processing areas: All drivers, haulers, and visitors must wear an approved hard hat whenever stepping outside their vehicle in the blue building.
-
Borrow one on-site: If you don’t have a hard hat in your truck, stop by the scale office—we provide sanitized loaner hard hats and safety glasses so you can complete your drop-off safely.
-
Or buy one while you’re here: Brand new hard hats are available for purchase, too. Just let us know, and we’ll knock $10 off of your payout, and you can keep your hard hat for later trips.
