If you are looking to sell a catalytic converter in Ohio, there are a few recent legislative updates you should know about. To help combat the rise in catalytic converter thefts, Ohio lawmakers recently passed House Bill 210, which implements stricter regulations on how these auto parts can be bought and sold at scrap yards
As a trusted partner in scrap metal recycling, Research Alloys is committed to keeping you informed and making sure your recycling process remains as seamless as possible. Here is a breakdown of what the new law means for your next visit:
No More Cash Payments
The biggest change affecting our daily operations is how we are allowed to pay you. Under the newly enacted Ohio law, scrap metal dealers are strictly prohibited from paying cash for detached catalytic converters. Going forward, all payments for catalytic converters must be issued via check or another traceable payment method. While we know cash is convenient, this state-mandated change is designed to create a clear paper trail and deter illegal sales.
Proof of Ownership is Now State Law (But It's Nothing New for Us!)
The new legislation also strictly requires that all sellers provide valid proof of ownership when selling a catalytic converter.
However, if you’re a regular customer at Research Alloys, you already know the drill! We have always required proof of ownership for catalytic converters. While some yards are just now scrambling to implement this policy, we have long maintained this standard to ensure we are conducting ethical, safe, and legal business. Whether it's a vehicle registration or title (which *must* be in the seller's name), continuing to bring your paperwork will ensure a quick and easy transaction.
We’re Here to Help
At Research Alloys, we fully support measures that keep our communities safe from theft while continuing to offer fair, competitive prices for your scrap. We are dedicated to making compliance easy so you don't have to worry about the heavy lifting.
If you have any questions about the new check payment rules or want to verify what documents you need to bring for your specific converter, feel free to give us a call or stop by the yard. We look forward to doing business with you!
