Last weekend, Columbus received over a foot of snow in record time. The city was under a level 3 snow emergency, and operations were suspended for a single day at Research Alloys as we plowed the lot, salted walkways, and made the facility safe. Then it was back to business as usual!
Despite frigid temps and mountains of snow, work continued in The Big Blue Building. Because we’re a fully enclosed scrap facility, all of our equipment is stored and / or operated out of the elements, and our team stays out of the snow and ice.
The biggest impediments to our work this time of year are, still, weather-related; many of our commercial and industrial clients had not sufficiently cleared their spaces of snow, and several roll-off containers couldn’t be collected. Many partners also closed down operations for at least part of the week due to cold temperatures and snow, and retail customers at our drive-through recycling center stayed at home and out of the cold.
These kinds of seasonal slowdowns are to be expected here in Central Ohio– and despite less material coming in each day, we’re happy to have the opportunity to continue serving Columbus’s recycling needs regardless of what the weatherman says. It’s also been a great opportunity to catch up on lots of work like baling wire and cans, cutting down aluminum and stainless steel, and giving the floor a nice scrub.
Come and check us out to see the difference– a foot of snow outside means nothing when we’ve got the lot plowed and salted, and even our steel yard is under roof and out of the snow. And if you don’t already, be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest on any potential weather-related closings or interruptions. Stay warm out there, Columbus!
