Catalytic Converters

Catalytic Converters contain valuable metals like platinum, palladium and rhodium. These metals are used in the catalyst to convert harmful exhaust gases into less harmful substances. But these valuable metals also make catalytic converters a target for frequent theft.

At Research Alloys, we buy catalytic converters from the public, and we’re working hard to help put a stop to converter theft. Anyone selling a catalytic converter must provide their valid, government-issued photo ID, as well as proof of ownership– this could be the car’s title or registration, but it must be in the seller’s name and match the converter. By Ohio State law, we can only purchase converters from one vehicle per customer per day. Additionally, our staff reserve the right to refuse a purchase from any seller for any reason-- so if we suspect a converter has been stolen or that a potential seller is being dishonest, we will refuse the transaction.

The scrap price of catalytic converters can vary greatly depending on the converter’s age, manufacturer, and more–all of these factors can affect the quantity of precious metals in the unit. Aftermarket converters tend to have the lowest value, while large foreign-made converters tend to have some of the highest values. Because of these variables, we do not quote converters over the phone. To get an estimate for a catalytic converter, please stop by Research Alloys’s buy-in center with the proper documentation. We’ll photograph your converter, check the database, and get you an individual quote worked up to ensure you get a great value for your unit.
